Bold opening: A prestigious research fellowship is up for grabs, offering a pathway to influence public health on a global scale. But here’s where it gets controversial: turning a fellowship into real-world impact requires navigating complex partnerships, funding constraints, and regional health challenges. The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) invites applications for the 2026 LSHTM Research Fellowship, with a deadline of January 7, 2026.

Overview
LSHTM stands among the world’s top public health universities, dedicated to advancing health equity in the UK and worldwide. The institution emphasizes research excellence, education, and the translation of findings into policy and practical solutions through collaboration with partners across the globe.

Position and project
Applications are invited for a part-time Research Fellow in the Department of Population Health (DPH) to participate in the Hararghe Health Research Partnership, a collaborative initiative between Haramaya University and LSHTM. The successful candidate will serve as an analyst on a study focused on perinatal mortality and its risk factors in eastern Hararghe, Ethiopia. This role provides an opportunity to contribute to important health outcomes while working within an international research network.

Benefits
- Salary will follow the LSHTM Grade 6 scale (approximately £45,728–£51,872 per year, pro rata, including London Weighting).
- Terms and conditions align with LSHTM policies; 30 working days of annual leave per year, pro rata for part-time staff, plus discretionary “Wellbeing Days.”
- Pension scheme eligibility.
- The position is based at Haramaya University, Ethiopia.

Eligibility
- A postgraduate degree in demography, epidemiology, or a closely related field, with strong quantitative or data science skills.
- Experience with health and demographic surveillance data collection and analysis in Ethiopia or similar settings is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in R, Stata, or other statistical software is essential.

Application details
- This is a part-time appointment (17.5 hours per week, 0.5 FTE) and is initially fixed-term through 31 August 2026, with the potential for extension.
- Funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, and available immediately.

Why this matters
This fellowship supports a critical intersection of health research, education, and policy translation in Ethiopia’s eastern region. Applicants who can demonstrate robust analytical skills, hands-on experience with surveillance data, and a collaborative mindset will be well-positioned to drive meaningful insights into perinatal health and its determinants.

Thought-provoking question
As emerging researchers join such partnerships, how should teams balance local health priorities with global research agendas to ensure findings translate into tangible improvements for communities?
