In a significant move that has caught the attention of baseball fans, the St. Louis Cardinals have reportedly reached an agreement with free agent reliever Ryne Stanek. As part of this transition, the Cardinals will need to create a spot on their 40-man roster for Stanek once he successfully completes his physical examination.
Stanek is set to embark on a new chapter in his career after experiencing a somewhat turbulent year and a half with the New York Mets. His journey with the Mets began when they acquired him from the Seattle Mariners during the 2024 trade deadline. Although he struggled initially, giving up 11 runs over 16 and a third innings during the regular season's final stretch, his impressive strikeout performance and solid contributions during the postseason convinced the Mets to sign him again for $4.5 million in free agency.
However, his second stint did not unfold as hoped. The 34-year-old faced challenges throughout the season, achieving commendable run prevention rates in May and July but faltering in the other four months. Ultimately, he concluded the season with a 5.30 earned run average (ERA) over 56 innings pitched. While ERA estimators were slightly more optimistic, both his strikeout and walk rates moved in the wrong direction.
Specifically, his strikeout rate of 22.7% was the lowest it had been in his nine-year career, a stark drop from nearly 28% just a season prior. This decline in strikeouts is particularly concerning because his command has never been his strongest attribute; he has walked at least 10% of the batters he has faced in all but one season, including a troubling 12.5% last year.
