The alarming rise in the use of mobile devices mounted within cars has caught the attention of the Ministry of Transport, as this trend poses significant risks related to distracted driving.
Transport Minister Eli Zakour expressed his concerns on Tuesday regarding the increasing prevalence of gadgets like video recorders and live streaming devices being employed in vehicles. He indicated that the Government is seriously considering whether new regulatory measures might be necessary to address this issue.
This statement came in response to inquiries from Independent Senator Dr. Marlene Attz, who questioned whether the Government was planning to implement additional regulations or enforcement actions to manage the escalating trend of using windscreen-mounted devices for video calls, recording, or live streaming while driving. She pointed out that such activities could not only distract drivers but also impair their visibility, thereby endangering road safety.
Zakour acknowledged that engaging in these activities while navigating a vehicle could divert drivers' attention, obscure their line of sight, and considerably jeopardize overall road safety. He emphasized that the Ministry is actively monitoring these emerging trends related to mobile technology and peripheral devices, particularly those that could detract from the purpose and effectiveness of current driving regulations.
He further stated that, although technological advancements are ongoing, drivers still hold the essential responsibility to maintain complete control of their vehicles and focus solely on the road ahead. This core obligation, he affirmed, remains unchanged despite evolving technologies.
Zakour mentioned that the matter is currently under review, with the Ministry seeking to ascertain whether there is a need for "additional regulatory provisions, precise definitions, or enhanced enforcement strategies" to effectively tackle the significant issue of distracted driving.
In addition, he reiterated that the Government's recent increase in traffic fines is just one component of a larger initiative aimed at reducing fatalities on the roads.
