Facebook's Delayed Response to Anti-Semitic Content: A Growing Concern
A leading anti-hate group has accused Facebook of failing to promptly remove posts that celebrate the murder of Jews and praise the Islamic State. These posts, which include graphic content and terrorist propaganda, were still accessible on the platform two days after the Bondi beach attack, which resulted in the deaths of 15 people celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukah.
The Community Security Trust (CST) reported that the posts received shares and likes, indicating widespread exposure and potential influence. Some of the accounts associated with these posts are based in Britain and have been reported to counter-terrorism police in the UK as a matter of urgency.
One post, which includes a video of the Bondi beach attack, features a chilling message: 'Allah is the greatest and praise to Allah.' It has received over 100 likes, 27 comments, and four shares, highlighting the reach and impact of such content.
Another post, containing a photo of one of the Bondi beach gunmen, includes the ominous phrase 'The coming years of art and hell' and praises an IS leader. This post has been shared 12 times and received over 300 likes, demonstrating the platform's struggle to control the spread of such material.
Facebook's response to these allegations has been mixed. After being contacted by the Guardian, they acknowledged the issue and stated that some posts had been removed. However, they did not provide a comprehensive explanation of their actions or a timeline for addressing the problem.
Dave Rich, the director of policy for the CST, expressed deep concern over the volume of IS-supporting accounts promoting terrorist content on Facebook. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, 'The sheer volume of IS-supporting accounts promoting terrorist content on Facebook is deeply alarming, and the posts celebrating the Bondi terrorist attack are utterly nauseating.'
Rich further called on Ofcom, the media regulator, to investigate Meta's (Facebook's parent company) failings and take strong action. Ofcom, in response, acknowledged receiving evidence of persistent terrorist content and illegal hate speech on major social media platforms, indicating a broader issue within the industry.
A spokesperson for Meta declined to answer specific questions but confirmed that the content had been removed due to violations of their policies regarding dangerous organizations and individuals.
The focus on pro-IS material on popular social media sites coincides with rising concerns about the targeting of Jewish people by terrorists across the West. The recent convictions of two men in a plot to obtain machine guns and shoot Jewish people in the north-west of England further underscore the evolving nature of terrorist threats.
Rich emphasized the seriousness of the English plot, stating, 'This is an even more serious plot than the attack on the synagogue in Heaton Park and indicates a much greater level of training and sophistication.'
Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for counter-terrorism policing, echoed the need for vigilance, saying, 'The terrorist threats we face do not stand still and we rarely confine them to history. Instead, they flex in intensity and risk over time – and so does our response.'
