Group C has been a rollercoaster of emotions, living up to its unpredictable nature. While Team USA dominates, Denmark, Germany, and Latvia battle for second place. Denmark took a crucial step forward with a 4-2 victory over Latvia.
Danish forward Mikkel Aagaard expressed relief, saying, 'We needed this win to boost our confidence. Despite not playing at our peak, we managed to secure the victory.'
The game's stars were Nick Olesen, with two goals and an assist, and Frederik Andersen, who made 31 saves. Latvia's Eduards Tralmaks also impressed with two points.
Danish goaltender Andersen acknowledged the challenge, 'Playing back-to-back games is tough, but we wanted the win. Our goal was to secure the three points and improve our position.'
Latvian captain Kaspars Daugavins admitted the defeat, 'We faced a strong Danish team with NHL players. Despite our efforts, a few unlucky bounces put us in a 3-0 hole. We fought hard but fell short.'
Latvia's previous win against Germany and Denmark's close game against the USA set the stage for this encounter. Denmark's Olesen, after the US game, hinted at a turnaround, 'We aim to improve and deliver better results.'
Olesen led by example, scoring in his first shift, just like he did against the Americans. Coach Mikael Gath's decision to start with the third line paid off. Olesen's forecheck disrupted a Latvian pass, setting up Aagaard for the game's first goal after just 23 seconds.
The duo struck again on the power play. Olesen's pass attempt to Blichfeld was intercepted but ended up with Aagaard, who scored to make it 2-0.
The game was intense, with both teams battling hard. Denmark's third goal showcased their skill and determination. Nikolaj Ehlers, assisted by Oliver Bjorkstrand, scored with a clever redirection.
But Latvia is known for their resilience. They demonstrated this in their previous game against Germany, scoring four unanswered goals.
Latvia's persistence paid off late in the first period. Kristaps Zile deflected a slapshot past Andersen to reduce the deficit to two.
The second period saw Latvia take control, determined to equalize. Zemgus Girgensons' faceoff win led to a precise pass to Tralmaks, who scored to make it 3-2.
Denmark's third period strategy was simple: survive. Latvia dominated, firing 12 shots, but Andersen and the Danish defense held firm.
With time ticking away, Denmark's Olesen sealed the win with an empty-net goal from 55 meters.
Olesen's post-game comment revealed his confidence, 'I know where the net is.'
Latvian goaltender Silovs reflected, 'We need to start stronger. The first period cost us, and we must improve our structure.'
