The fate of FM radio is once again under scrutiny by the UK government, with ministers initiating a review that could shape the future of radio distribution beyond 2030. This review is a crucial step in determining whether FM radio will continue to be a part of our lives or if it will eventually be phased out.
With almost 75% of listeners now opting for digital or online platforms, the government is considering a managed transition away from FM in the coming decade. The review will delve into the changing behaviors of listeners, the evolving audio market, and the impact of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. It will also assess how decisions regarding Digital Terrestrial Television might influence radio services.
This isn't the first time such a review has taken place. A previous Radio and Audio Review in 2021 recommended that FM radio should continue until at least 2030, with a suggestion to revisit the topic in 2026. This new review follows that timeline and coincides with World Radio Day on February 13th, which this year is focused on radio and AI.
Media Minister Ian Murray emphasized the importance of radio, stating, "In the midst of a media revolution, radio remains a powerful and popular medium that holds a special place in people’s lives." Radiocentre's CEO, Matt Payton, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need to ensure radio's distribution and accessibility for future generations, especially with the rise of smart speakers, radio sets, and connected cars.
Jonathan Wall, Director of BBC Sounds, also shared his thoughts, "The industry shares a common objective to secure and protect the future of radio for our listeners."
So, what does the future hold for FM radio? Will it continue to thrive, or will it eventually be replaced by digital platforms? This review aims to answer these questions and shape the future of radio as we know it.
