Shaedon Sharpe Takes the Lead for the Blazers
In an intriguing turn of events, the Portland Trail Blazers had a rare opportunity to catch their breath this week, with only two games on the schedule against the New Orleans Pelicans and the Golden State Warriors. The team faced a setback, losing to the Pelicans, but bounced back with a victory over the Warriors, finishing the week with a split record of 1-1.
Amidst these matchups, the standout player of the week is undoubtedly Shaedon Sharpe.
Sharpe made headlines with his remarkable performance, averaging an impressive 28.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists throughout the week. What really sets his scoring apart is the phenomenal efficiency he displayed—shooting 62.5% from the field and an astounding 69.2% from three-point range. While his previous struggles with efficiency have been widely discussed, this week could signal the beginning of a significant improvement in that area, which would make his scoring potential even more explosive.
However, we should keep in mind that these shooting percentages are based on a limited number of games and may not be sustainable as the season progresses. Nonetheless, his standout 35-point performance against the Warriors was instrumental in securing the win for Portland. If Sharpe can replicate such performances consistently throughout the season, he could become a key player for the Blazers, particularly if they find themselves vying for a spot in the Play-In tournament later this year.
In addition to his scoring, Sharpe showcased his defensive capabilities by recording four steals against the Warriors. His aggressiveness on defense created opportunities to disrupt the opposing offense. While he still has room for improvement in man-to-man scenarios, being able to create turnovers will help mitigate some of those defensive weaknesses.
This week, two other players also deserve recognition: Jerami Grant and Sidy Cissoko.
Both Grant and Cissoko earned honorable mentions for their noteworthy contributions, despite a less impressive overall performance in one of the games. Grant, in particular, shone brightly with 35 points, shooting 12-of-22 from the field and 7-of-13 from three-point territory in the victory over Golden State. Impressively, 19 of his points came in a thrilling fourth quarter where he matched Stephen Curry shot for shot, ultimately leading the Blazers to victory with his clutch scoring.
On the other hand, Cissoko achieved a personal milestone by scoring a career-high 20 points in the loss to the Pelicans. He also contributed with 4 rebounds and 2 assists, hitting 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Although the game ended in a disappointing blowout, Cissoko’s efforts were vital in keeping the game from becoming an even larger defeat.
