Imagine the chaos of an icy road, a hazard born from a water leak left unattended for weeks. A utility company is facing serious criticism after a water leak in Maidstone transformed into a sheet of ice over the weekend, causing dangerous conditions for drivers and pedestrians.
Residents of Spring Vale first alerted South East Water to the leaking manhole cover back in November. The water, gushing from the drain, flowed across Buckland Road, a location particularly dangerous due to a bend in the road.
As temperatures plummeted over the weekend, the water froze, turning the road into an icy hazard. But here's where it gets controversial: social media lit up with complaints, with many pointing out that the leak had been reported over a month prior. One commenter even suggested that South East Water needed to take more immediate action.
Cllr Stuart Jeffery, the leader of Maidstone council and a local resident, confirmed he had personally reported the leak multiple times. While the water company did attend the site once, the leak remained unfixed. The Kent County Council (KCC) had to step in on Sunday evening to grit the road, providing a temporary solution.
South East Water has issued an apology to the affected customers. They stated that they have investigated the source of the water and are working with local authorities to schedule a repair as quickly as possible.
