Winter Weather Alert: University of Delaware Prepares for Blizzards and Storms
The University of Delaware is gearing up for a challenging week ahead, with a winter storm warning and blizzard alert in place for the entire region. Governor Matt Meyer has declared a state of emergency, and the university has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its community.
Sunday, February 22nd: Early Closures and Transportation Disruptions
As the snow begins to fall, the university is implementing the following changes:
- Transportation Services: All transportation services will be suspended at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, with updates available on the Transportation website or the Shuttle app. Be prepared for potential delays and plan your travel accordingly.
- Main Street Bookstore: The Barnes & Noble Bookstore on Main Street in Newark will close at 4 p.m. on Sunday.
- Early Closures: Morris Library, The Carpenter Sports Building, and the Student Centers will all close at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. Denny's will not open.
- Dining Halls: Residential dining halls will remain open with regular hours, closing at 8:30 p.m.
- Parking: Campus parking enforcement will be suspended, and resident students are encouraged to park in designated areas at the Trabant Center and Center for the Arts. Please follow all parking regulations.
Monday, February 23rd: Campus-Wide Closure and Virtual Learning
- Newark Campus: The University will suspend all operations on the Newark campus at 12:01 a.m. on Monday. Only essential personnel should report to work, and they are advised to park in University garages for easier snow removal.
- Non-Essential Staff: Non-essential staff are released from their duties and are not expected to work on-site or remotely.
- In-Person Instruction: No in-person classes will be held on Monday. Instructors have the flexibility to cancel, reschedule, or conduct virtual sessions.
- Dining Services: Russell Dining Hall will be closed, while Caesar Rodney and Pencader dining halls will operate on a brunch-dinner schedule. Check the Dining Services website for updated hours.
- Closures: Morris Library, The Carpenter Sports Building, ice arenas, Student Centers, Wellbeing Center, Clayton Hall, and the Main Street Bookstore will all be closed.
Tuesday, February 24th and Beyond: Monitoring and Updates
The University will continue to monitor the winter storm and provide further updates as needed. Information regarding Tuesday's operations and academic schedules will be shared on UDaily, ensuring everyone stays informed.
Other Campuses and Areas:
- OLLI courses, Associate in Arts Programs (AAP) classes in Wilmington, and Carvel Center and Paradee Center operations will be affected by the weather.
- The Hugh R. Sharp campus in Lewes will also have modified schedules, with essential personnel only reporting to work.
